Beschreibung
Der auf der Alaska-Halbinsel gelegene Katmai-Nationalpark ist der viertgrößte Nationalpark der USA. Seine Gründung geht auf einen gewaltigen Vulkanausbruch im Jahr 1912 zurück, der das Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes bildete. Um diese Landschaft und die darin sich ansiedelnde Tierwelt zu schützen, wurde das Gebiet 1918 zum National Monument erklärt. Der Katmai bietet Braunbären, Wölfen und vielen anderen Spezies einen optimalen Lebensraum.
