    Der unbeliebte Lehrer Paul Hunham, der verbitterte Schüler Angus Tully und die um ihren Sohn trauernde Schulköchin Mary verbringen 1970 die Weihnachtstage alleine im elitären Jungeninternat Barton. - Kameramann Eigil Bryld verwendete modernes Equipment, doch durch nostalgische Filmtechnik und digital ergänztes Filmkorn wirkt "The Holdovers" wie original aus den 70ern. Für Dominic Sessa war Angus seine erste professionelle Rolle überhaupt. Co-Star Da'Vine Joy Randolph wurde für ihre warmherzige und herzzerreißende Performance als Mary mit dem Oscar ausgezeichnet.
